vending at Caminarte 2023

Izzy Cipakli

I am a mixed media artist from El Sereno Ca, (Tovangaar). I enjoy combining techniques I’ve learned from illustration, printmaking and fiber arts. I often work within the themes of childhood, Queer and Trans identity, and Indigenous reverence for the land. I use artmaking as a way to connect with my inner child and my art process is often unplanned and messy. Through my work I enjoy creating worlds where Queer and Trans bodies are loved and celebrated where borders do not exist or are known.

I learned how to crochet when I was 11 years old at a community workshop but I didn’t stick with it. It wasn’t until 2020 that I returned back to the craft and couldn’t put it down. I began selling my pieces in 2021 and I deeply appreciate the community and friends I’ve made through vending, especially with the Caminarte Boyle Heights community who I have vended with since 2021. I also believe in connecting with my inner child through my crochet work which is why I enjoy making bright and colorful one of a kind pieces. I enjoy the opportunity to slow down and work on a project especially in an era where fast fashion has become the norm. I hope to spread awareness about DIY, repurposing, and handmade clothing items through my work.

Aside from my art practice I am also a teaching artist and assistant at Self Help Graphics and Art and I love teaching and learning with youth and their families. I have also facilitated my own workshops through my Cultural Worker Apprenticeship with Meztli Projects and hope to bring more free art opportunities to my community. I am currently a student at ELAC. In my down time I enjoy spending time in my backyard with a good book, watching scary movies, and dancing with my friends.

Thank you for all the love and support for my work!
